Twenty-five million Americans have osteoporosis (most common bone disease). Fifty thousand people die each year because of it. Yet, most of us know little about protecting ourselves from this disease.
DEXA is an acronym for Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, or Dual Energy X-ray Densitometry. DEXA uses low-energy X-rays to measure the density of bones. When measuring bone density, the DEXA scan is usually performed on the lower spine, hip and wrist. A DEXA scan provides more detailed information than a standard X-ray. The resulting scan is reviewed by a radiologist who has sub-specialty expertise in nuclear medicine.
